Selling Through A Slump by Oracle

An Industry-by-Industry Playbook to Help You Prepare for the Recovery

Even today, when there is a hope, selling to a market hit by recession is difficult. People will not be willing to take any risks and they will buy whatever they think absolutely necessary to them. Selling has become difficult, if not impossible.

Oracle Corporation, one of the leaders in ERP, only second to SAP, has come up with an interesting eBook. This is called “Selling through a Slump – An Industry-by-Industry Playbook to Help You Prepare for the Recovery”. I found this eBook very interesting and surprising.

When I downloaded this for free, I was expecting lots of technical details throughout the book. I even expected this to promote one of their products. But I was wrong. This eBook did neither. Instead, this eBook was focused on helping each industry by providing them valuable tips from industries leading sales people and consultants.

As its name suggested, this eBook provides valuable information for different industry sectors. Information is intended to help each of these industries to sell better even in this tough times. Their advice covers sectors like retailing, public sector, insurance, law, manufacturing and even media. There are 11 sections covered altogether. There is one industry expert per sector giving you all these valuable information. All this information is beautifully packed just into 25 pages.

One of the experts sharing his knowledge is “Skip Anderson”. He is the founder and president of “Selling to Consumers”. He is the creator of “3d Selling™”. Anne Miller, is another expert sharing her knowledge in this eBook. Some of her clients according to her website[1] are WSJ, New York Times, and The NYSE. I guess her clients lists and their feedback tells a story.

I have to say this is a well formatted document. Although it is in common PDF format, nice linking structure and presentation makes it very easy to read and navigate. Oracle has certainly showed their class with this document. Most of the advice is in point form. So you can easily identify the once relevant to you.

Even though this book segregate information by markets, I found some expert selling advice can be used everywhere. One of these advises listed on the retail section in this eBook caught my attention. It says “Hire sales people to sell, not customer service people.” I believe this is a very valuable piece of advice for anyone who is interested in selling. You may use this advice regardless of the industry you are in.

In summary, I would say this is a great resource for anyone, regardless of their industry, age or the profession. There is no need to have any technical knowledge to understand this document. I am very pleased with presentation of the eBook as well. It may take around 1o minutes to cover an industry sector. But it is well worth reading, especially when it is provided free of charge.
